7/3/23 News+Center

We wanted to wish everyone a safe Fourth of July and a healthy and happy summer. We also apologize for the mix-up with the dismissal time for the last day of school.

We will be checking the school email periodically throughout the summer should you have any questions; but in the meantime, we wanted to share a few highlights from the end of the year as well as some updates on the academic calendar for the next three years!

Please let us know if we need to add or remove any contact information to the PTA email list.

We look forward to seeing you in September.

Celebrating Ms. Schwartz

In case you missed it, the New York Times featured a story on Ms. Schwartz:

We have included two images of tributes to her from both the staff and students.

NYC Public Schools

The DOE announced the next three years of academic calendars: They can be found at the link below:

Changing by the Minute

Ms. Berkery also shared this information too.

A private screener page has been sent to your email so you can revel in a little Center School joy — watching two documentaries made by Camilla Calamandrei (after being embedded in the school for a full year).

  • Changing By The Minute (62 min)
  • Y’All R Real Ones: Middle School Moments (10min)

She made these films as a tribute to this unique school that embraces early adolescence with such gusto and good cheer — but also as an inspiration to help reverse the narrative of early adolescence as a negative time.

The two films and discussion guides were launched in August 2022, and are currently being used by:

  • Success Bound (200 Chicago Public Schools)
  • Youth-Nex Center for Positive Youth Development (Univ of Virginia)
  • Middle Grades Collaborative
  • Univ of Maine Institute of Middle Level Education
  • AMLE (Association of Middle Level Education)
  • And more to come!

You can:

  • read about the project here
  • watch the films

Composting

The Sanitation Dept. is installing new compost bins all around the neighborhood including a bin at 84th/Columbus, by the PS9 entrance (see photo)!
