For Families

Center School families are a vital resource to the Center School and the community. There are many ways to participate, whether it be sharing your time and talent fundraising, running for the PTA or SLT or supporting our teaching staff and children. If you are interested, please check out the various committees and contact us to learn more!

UPDATES

End of May, 2021

Dear Families,

It’s hard to believe that we are entering the last month of this odd year. It is gratifying to me that we feel as if our kids did spend a year learning. They did not have “real” school where we would have been able to cajole them into taking risks in class but they did well. We all look forward to next September as a return to “normalcy” which means the usual Center School culture which is our own slightly quirky brand of normal.

Meanwhile the month of June lies ahead. Thursday, June 3 and Tuesday, June 8 are teacher clerical days and there is no school for the kids. June 10 is the 8th grade final show which will once again be virtual. You’ll get a zoom for that as the time gets closer.

June 21 is graduation. All of the children come to school as usual on that day and get to witness our first outdoor graduation, masked. School will be dismissed after graduation around 12:30. No adults are allowed to attend except the families of the graduates who will have 3 tickets. They will be seated in pods in the playground and must be masked throughout the ceremony. Last year the graduation was virtual. We are excited to have this one live.

June 25 is the last day of school and will be a half day. Let’s make sure we are all still working at staying safe.

Ms. Schwartz

May 20, 2021

Dear Families,

All of you in blended should have your paper survey in hand. Children brought them home yesterday and today. It’s important for the school especially this weird year, to get as many as possible turned in. For the kids, its importance is the promise of a pizza party for completed homerooms. Remote families will get instructions so look for an email. Just to keep us on track as we barrel forward. This Monday, May 24, John Lewis will be in school and Susan B. Anthony will have a remote day of learning. We will all have advisory. The next Monday is Memorial Day, no school for anyone. I’m looking forward to Writer’s Night following the June 2 PTA meeting. It is a wonderful night where writer’s and friends of The Center School share excerpts of their work. This year, like last year, it will be a zoom event. It’s a very special event – save the date. Fill out your form and get it back to us. Enjoy the sometimes no mask if you are vaccinated time we are entering. School however, remains 6’ apart and masked and hands eternally rewashed. It’s kept us safe and that’s what we all want.

Stay safe. Ms. Schwartz

May 11, 2021

Dear Families,

Just a news bulletin. In spite of objections and pleas from many parts of the city, the middle school admissions office did not allow for sibling preferences city wide this year so we have many disappointed families. We are sorry since family has always been important to us and with the pandemic became even more so. Hopefully, this too shall pass.

No school for anyone this Thursday, May 13 Eid – al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan.

Monday, May 17, Susan B. Anthony is in School and John Lewis stays home and has remote classes.

Stay safe!

Ms. Schwartz

May 8, 2021

Dear Families,

It was so exciting to see John Lewis and Susan B Anthony 8th graders together in the yard for a group picture and to get their sweatshirts. That’s one tradition that they got to share. More to follow. A reminder to all since it is confusing: Monday May 10 – John Lewis cohort comes to school Susan B Anthony has all Monday remote classes Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday are the same as usual.

Thursday May 13 – Eid al-Fitr – end of Ramadan – school is closed. No news yet on the 3’ allowance so that kids can reenter the school. Will keep you posted although the way the system works you may hear rst from the newspapers. Meanwhile stay safe. We have made it through most of the year.

Ms. Schwartz

April 16. 2021

Dear Families,

We still are accommodating children 6’ apart. That 3’ mark is what we are waing for. Each advisory has a plan for advisory day so hopefully, we will have good weather on our side. Our schedule ,wth all majors on Monday ,allowed for a consistent schedule until now. But starting May 3, we will not have the remote day. We will sll have remote Advisory. The why of is is because the DOE expects schools to be open every day of the week. We will miss those Mondays. The new schedule will start on Monday, May 3 when only Susan B Anthony will come to school.

May 10 – John Lewis

May 17 – Susan b Anthony

May 24 – John Lewis

May 31 – Memorial Day NO SCHOOL.

We will deal with June later. Like advisory day we hope to be able to find all school events that can happen. Stay safe and masked.

Ms. Schwartz
