Summer Opportunities for Students

Mind the Gap, an intergenerational theater program, connects young people and elders through the power of storytelling.

This free workshop matches New Yorkers aged 60 and up with teens ages 14 to 19. Participants interview each other over the course of 12 sessions, learning about their partners’ lives and dreams. They write or devise short plays based on the material they gather and in a culminating celebration, hear their scripts read aloud by professional actors or perform their own work.

MIND THE GAP – PLAYWRITING WORKSHOP – SUMMER 2024

SESSIONS
Tuesdays and Thursdays – In Person
July 9 – August 13, 2024, 4:00-6:00 pm

LOCATION
All sessions will take place at The Sheen Center, located at 18 Bleecker Street, New York, NY on the corner of Elizabeth and Bleecker.

The goals of the program are both to teach writing and theater skills and foster better communication and understanding between these two age groups. No playwriting or theater experience is necessary to participate in Mind the Gap.

Message from a Former Student

Somerset Seidenberg, a Center School graduate, who now attends Stuyvesant has organized a Benefit Concert for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The concert will take place on Thursday, May 23rd at 7:30 pm at Merkin Hall in Kaufman Music Center.

Somerset serves on the St. Jude Leadership Society (SJLS) of NY this year. Since 2017, SJLS has been an organization of high performing high school students who exercise leadership while raising awareness and funds for the children of St. Jude. SJLS raised over $650K nationally last year. St. Jude is a cause that is very close to her heart. Her mother is a cancer survivor, and they recognize firsthand the profound gift St. Jude gives to its patients and their families.

In addition to attending Stuyvesant, she is also piano major at Manhattan School of Music. As her fundraising strategy, she decided to organize a Young Musicians Benefit Concert for St. Jude. She has gathered some of the best young musicians to be on the stage with her, with most of them from the pre-Colleges of Juilliard and Manhattan School of Music. The world-renowned pianist Evgeny Kissin will be endorsing the concert with a video greeting.
